In fear of Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs: Why Manchester City need to abolish capital punishment at home

If Manchester City are serious about being title contenders then they need to stop losing so many games at home, and in particular stop losing at home to London’s big clubs: Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham have won on City’s home turf more times in the Premier League era than any other clubs.

This statistic is pertinent now because City are at home to Arsenal this weekend.

In the Premier League era (since 1992), City have competed in the top division for 13-and-a-bit seasons, playing 253 home games so far, and losing 81 of them. Of those, 28 have been lost to the three London sides alone: Chelsea have won 10 times on City’s turf in the Premier League season, and Arsenal and Spurs nine times each.

The table below details all their home defeats, at least by number of losses per club, and it also shows the season-by-season losses to London’s big three clubs. City have yet to experience a single Premier League season without at least one home defeat to one of those three, and in four of their 13 seasons they have lost at home to all three of them.

Could this season be City’s year to avoid defeat to all three? Already they have beaten Chelsea 1-0 at home. Next up are Arsenal this week.

Then there is a wait until the middle of April for the home game with Tottenham. (Although that is not a fixture to relish, as it detailed elsewhere, where City are revealed as having a poorer record against Spurs in the Premier League era than any other team).
