The three Pakistan cricketers at the centre of the ‘spot-fix’ scandal arising from the fourth Test against England at Lord’s last summer are to face criminal charges, the Crown Prosecution Service has announced today.
Separately, Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir will discover on Saturday the verdicts from their ICC ‘sporting trial’ in January. Those close to them fear the prospect of life bans from cricket. The timing of the CPS announcement does not bode well for the players.
How so? Because the ICC tribunal had access, effectively, to the same body of evidence against the players as...

Tony McCoy’s victory in the 2010 Grand National has been acknowledged as the ‘Jump off the sofa’ moment of the British sporting year so far, bolstering his credentials as the favourite to win next month’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.
The category was included in the inaugural Jaguar Academy of Sport Awards, which took place last night in the Long Room at Lord’s.
Other awards went to Graeme McDowell (most inspirational British sportsman of 2010 for winning the US Open), Jess Ennis (most inspirational British sportswoman), Amy Williams (best British sporting performance, for winning Winter Olympic...

Sir Ian Botham has stoked the rivalry between England and Australia by claiming the English will “stuff” their rivals in the forthcoming Ashes series, and says victory for the tourists will be all the sweeter when England “beat the convicts in their own back yard”.
Botham has a famous Ashes history and is scheduled to fly to Australia this evening to cover the series – which starts on 25 November – as a pundit. He made his prediction last night in the Long Room at Lord’s, where he was attending the inaugural Jaguar Academy of Sport awards....
