Baggies in search of first league win over United since 1984, first at OT since 1978

We hinted last week that West Brom might be encountering Chelsea at just the right time to gain their first Premier League victory against them – or indeed their first Premier League point – at the 12th time of asking.

How did that go, AVB?

A week later and West Brom will find themselves playing at Old Trafford where another “duck” awaits them.  There has been no Baggies win over United in 11 Premier League attempts.

We placed the United v West Brom fixture at No4 in our ranking of one-sided Premier League encounters earlier this week.

Can lightning strike again so soon? On balance, we’d have to think ‘No’.

West Brom’s last league victory over United was at the Hawthorns on 31 March 1984 when Steve MacKenzie and Cyrille Regis scored the goals in a 2-0 victory.

Their last league victory at Old Trafford dates back to 30 December 1978 and a 5-3 win. That day the West Brom goals came from Tony Brown (2), Len Cantello, Laurie Cunningham and Cyrille Regis. Brian Greenhoff, Gordon McQueen and Sammy McIlroy had scored first-half goals for United.

That season West Brom would finish third in the First Division, six places above Man Utd. But enough of ancient history.

Below is West Brom’s head to head record against all opponents in the Premier League era.
