Taking the woe road: Fulham’s awful away days, and glimmer of hope at Newcastle

There’s no nice way of saying this: Fulham are rubbish on the road.

They haven’t won an away game in the Premier League since the opening day of last season. That’s as poor as West Ham, which is poor, believe me. That’s 24 games ago. It’s bad, really bad, as Michael Jackson might say if were still around to cavort along the river with Mo Harrods.

But it’s pretty much what Fulham fans have got used to over the past decade, during which time Fulham have had only 23 wins in 10 years. I know. It stinks.

This is Fulham’s 10th consecutive season in the top flight of English football. Only nine clubs, Fulham included, can count 10 straight years or more in the division. And Fulham have by far the worst record of those nine clubs. Tottenham have the next worse record – and their record is almost TWICE is good: 45 away wins to Fulham’s 23. (See table of those nine clubs in graphic below, which also includes details of Fulham’s away wins).

And yet, and yet, and yet. But, but, but.

As regular readers will know, we here at Super Statto Towers are not in the business of merely pointing out a team’s failings without giving a glimmer of hope.

And Fulham’s glimmer this weekend comes from the fact they visit Newcastle. Oh yes.

More than a quarter of Fulham’s away wins in these 10 years under consideration (or six from 23) have come at just two grounds: Fulham have won three times at each of Newcastle and Manchester City in that period in the league.

Three! That’s positively rampant by Fulham’s standards. They’ve never won at all in the decade at Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Everton, Liverpool or five other clubs (see below).
