Here are the era by era tables, including only those 20 clubs who will make up the 2011-12 season. (So this does not include a few clubs, like Leeds, who could be among the top dozen overall if their long-ago successes were counted).
THE NOUGHTIES: When the ‘Big Four’ were Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.
THE NINETIES: When the ‘Big Four’ were Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa.
THE EIGHTIES: When the ‘Big Four’ were Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Everton.
THE SEVENTIES: When the ‘Big Four’ were Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton and Manchester City.
THE SIXTIES: When the ‘Big Four’ were Tottenham, Everton, Manchester United and Arsenal.
THE FIFTIES and LATE FORTIES: When the ‘Big Four’ were Manchester United, Wolves and Arsenal (and West Brom / Liverpool).
